Live Bait Fishing Rig – Balloon Fishing Rig

Home  /  Live Bait Fishing Rig – Balloon Fishing Rig

We feature two types of live bait fishing rig commonly used around Australian waters.

Balloon Live Bait Rig

This live bait rig is amazingly effective to target top water predatory fish species. These include Tuna, Barracuda, Spanish Mackerel, Queenfish and Kingfish.

Live Bait Balloon Rig

Assemble the rig by using a 2 – 3-meter length of heavy leader (typically 80 lbs) connected to a hook and swivel, respectively. A balloon is then attached to the swivel with a light monofilament line, which acts as a break away when the bait is taken. Attach the hook to the live bait on its back, just before the dorsal fin, but ensure that the hook is not too shallow to avoid it from breaking away.

Mid Water Bait Rig

The second live bait rig is useful in scenarios where you want to present the bait at a specific depth.  This live bait fishing rig is effective against species like Cobia, Kingfish and Giant Trevally.

Live Bait Rig

The rig assembly is like that of a ledger rig, but with only one dropper leg.  Use a suitably rated leader (typical 80 lbs) with hook and sinker. In a similar manner, attach the hook to the live bait on its back, just before the dorsal fin. Alternatively, the hook may be attached on the bait fish’s nose to allow for a faster turnaround.
